cat roulette
chatroulette is another one of those quirky phenomons taking the internet by storm. even mr. twitter, himself, ashton kutcher is giving it a go. impressive as that sounds, it's a brooklyn cat named "duck" who's already been seen over 70,000 times.

cali does it again
maybe it seems like we're all on the california bandwagon lately, but the state has been making amazing strides in animal rights legislation.
west hollywood recently enacted an ordinance prohibiting all sales of dogs and cats in pet stores. however, they are permitted to offer adoptable animals from local shelters.
at madcat, our mantra is that we don't sell animals - in america, five million dogs and cats die each year just because they don't have human addresses. we're all about supporting local rescue.

future toys
the folks over at wired like to imagine what our world will look like in the future, even the cat toys. the ratborg 3000 sounds like the kind of thing gabby would be into: "the chew toy that fights back!"
and here we thought laser pointers and the undercover mouse were pretty futuristic.
at least they aren't driving snowmobiles....yet. that will be one scary future.

california abuse laws
california is leading the pack again when it comes to animal welfare legislation. remember the city-wide bans on declawing? now the state legislature is considering enacting an online state-registry of convicted animal abusers, similar to those already in use for sex offenders.

madcat music
ever wonder what a website would sound like? yah, we never really did either but someone must have. codeorgan.com uses a complex algorithm to turn any url address, like felineunderground.com, into music.
we tried it and were excited to find out how great we sound! not as good as this guy, but pretty cool anyway. give it a try!

got no soul
hey charlie b. barkin, i guess all dogs don't go to heaven, at least not according to the owner of eternal earth-bound pets usa, a service that provides care for your pets left behind by the rapture.
the owner claims that pets don't have souls, so they'll remain on earth in the event of the second-coming.
for a mere $110, a network of atheists will take care of your pet post-rapture. no refund if you yourself are not "raptured."

nikki madcat, fe-9 cop
madison's K-9 patrol unit is now the largest in Wisconsin with six dogs. we even have our own trainer.
so when are they going to add a Fe-9 unit? cat cops could be pretty useful. nikki would play "bad cop" to lucy's "good cop."

while it's name isn't as cool as he-man's faithful "battlecat" it's still pretty neat - the sundaland clouded leopard.
how exciting that during a time when we're losing species to global changes a new one pops up in asia? and it's a cat! bonus!

new amendments to oreo's law
we've been following oreo's law for awhile now - legislature aimed at preventing any animal in new york from being killed when other options are available.
now the law has been amended to appease some unexpected opponents of the law - namely ed sayres, head of the aspca.
we'll keep you posted. for now, check out the no kill advocacy center for ways you can get involved.

nature's variety raw chicken - voluntary recall
it seems a small amount of raw chicken tested positive for low-level salmonella at a nature's variety plant in texas. they have issued a voluntary recall on frozen chicken patties and medallions with the best by date of 11/10/10. all affected product is returnable.
no animals or people have been affected. this is a pre-emptive step taken by nature's variety as part of their quality control program.
we want to encourage feeders of raw food to keep investing in the health of their pets by feeding species-appropriate diets, like nature's variety. canine guts have evolved to process huge loads of bacteria found in dead and decaying prey and even in cases of large salmonella outbreaks it was the humans, not the dogs, who were affected.

stealing your own dog
what would you do if you couldn't afford your dog's vet bill and the dog was going to be put to sleep? probably what this guy did. isn't it amazing what a little help from the community can do? no kill now.
more news regarding the ethics of uw's animal testing. chancellor biddy responded in favor of the decision that testing is alright. we wonder what the student body thinks of all this?

what's shakin?
did anyone feel the earthquake last night? since it happened around 4am most of us were asleep.
maybe your cats noticed? some scientists say animals, like carp fish, can predict earthquakes as much as 2 weeks in advance while cats and dogs seem to notice them within a few hours.
let us know if your furrkids were behaving strangely by posting on our facebook wall.

cat grass and death stares
if you've ever wondered if your cat is plotting to kill you, here's a guide.
they mention throwing up grass as a sign to look for. but did you know eating grass is actually a good thing? wheat grass isn't just for jamba juice anymore.

super bowl
the big game is this coming sunday. will you be watching? let's hope they have more awesome cat commercials like this one - it's an old favorite of ours.
if you're entering into any bets on the game's outcome, you may want to check with these oregon cats before laying your money down on the colts - they did predict the steelers' win last year.
not into football? you may prefer animal planet's puppy bowl, featuring the bissel kitty half-time show.

happy groundhog day
punxutawney phil may have seen his shadow but sun prairie's own jimmy the groundhog predicts an early spring!
meanwhile, peta is still trying to get 6 more weeks of publicity for themselves. this time they want a robotic groundhog.
in the land of youtube a groundhog chases down its shadow and a cat completely ignores an invading groundhog altogether.

update: rosie has been found! she had made her way into the inside of a hot tub via a loose panel and was kept warm from the tub's insulation. she's back home this morning with her mom and sister, doing fine and eating to her heart's content. happy endings are the best.
rosie went missing on saturday, january 30th in the vilas neighborhood. she was one of our featured happy cats, previously named kiki, and is around one and a half years old. rosie has an orange striped coat, long hair, is a little chubby and is microchipped.
if you have any information on rosie,
or know someone who has recently taken in a cat, please contact her guardian here.
