afghanistan war hero dies in arizona shelter

a dog who survived wartorn afghanistan and a suicide bombing lasted only one weekend in a US shelter.

target saved the lives of countless soldiers when she stopped a suicide bomber from detonating himself within an army barracks.  she was hailed as a hero and brought home to america by sergeant terry young.

she was "mistakenly" killed at an arizona shelter on monday before her owner could claim her. 

this story is a tragic and heartbreaking example of why we need no kill.  now.

winograd on missouri's prop b

missouri's prop b is a great step one in the fight against puppy mills. but no kill champion nathan winograd asks, what about step two?

while winograd does support the legislation, he makes the very good point that the proposition itself does not contain any provisions as to what will happen to the dogs over the 50 dog per business limit.

"...they claim that puppy millers are going to voluntarily spay/neuter dogs and spend money on their lifetime care without any profit in it. that is an exercise in sheer self-delusion at best, and an intentional misrepresentation at worst. plan b, according to HSUS, means the dogs will go to “a humane organization” which simply means a missouri kill shelter. either way, the dogs are dead."

prop b is a good step. but more work must be done toward a no kill nation.

the "lost" dogs

the guy who wrote the "where are they now" article on michael vick's dogs has turned it into a book.

gorant writes about the amazing stories of the 47 "lost cause" dogs who were deemed unable to be rehabilitated by both the hsus and peta. now they have found new homes and are making a difference in hundreds of lives.

as gorant says, "pit bulls are not bad dogs, but they can have bad owners. and if there's one great result from the vick case, it's that animals deserve a second chance." we couldn't agree more.

oreo goes home

some punks just can't handle the 'nip, huh?

this bunch o' double-stuff goodness is  oreo, who found a great home during sunday's adoption fair. hard to believe she was scheduled to be euthanized a couple weeks ago.

and why? - shelter "overcrowding", and the fact that oreo needed some dental work. but local no-kill group happycat intervened, and this lapcat is going to her forever home.

we need more success stories like oreo's, and we need no kill now.

oreo's law - put on hold

the future of sheltering was supposed to be  in the balance today as the state assembly of new york was to vote on oreo's law, the bill aimed at preventing animals from being killed in shelters when rescue options are available.   in other words, a BFD for no kill.

but it looks like the assembly agriculture committee tabled the bill, meaning it's on hold until next year.  next year.  to the detriment of new york's shelter animals it looks like ed sayres and his ASPCA won this round.
