get ready for the goose kill

the parks department is going ahead with their promise to use any measure -including killing - to control the "goose problem" in madison. they recently secured a permit to kill 350 geese in four parks -olin-turville, brittingham, goodman and vilas, as well as the wingra creek shoreline.

when? no one seems to know, although it is certain the goose kill will take place within the next few weeks, while the birds are molting and unable to fly away.

makes sense that the board would want to keep the kill under wraps. as ald. mark clear told the isthmus, "it's something i believe should be kept relatively quiet," he says. "crowds of humans wouldn't be conducive to the work the parks department needs to do."

will madison's geese ever be safe?

two more park's commission meetings will discuss the fate of madison's tarred and feathered friends.  first, it was the threat to planes.  then, the overpopulation.  wonder what the excuse will be this time? 

all we know is that they are certainly nowhere near as dangerous as bees have been this week.

warner geese update

it's front-page news again.  the volunteer group, wild warner, was put in charge of working with the parks department to come up with a new plan for the geese and now we have their report.

as the no madison goose kill group had already suggested wild warner is advocating GeesePeace  tactics and suggesting the airport employ avian-detecting technology to avoid the already rare bird-strikes.

now we just have to wait and see if the parks department agrees with them tonight.

fingers crossed for a no kill madison that is as progressive with its wildlife as it is with its politics.
