wheelie bin woman is not amused
she says she only put the cat in the trashcan as a joke and doesn't understand all the hate being thrown at her because "it's just a cat."
meanwhile, threatening posts and groups are being removed from facebook out of fear for her safety. even the cats are fighting back.
want to get even? take your anger out on this whack-a-cat-dumping-woman game. it's harder than it looks. we only got 9 out of 30.

the doggie gaga project
some genius recently had the brilliant idea of dressing up man's best friend as the fashion weirdo icon lady gaga. he called it the doggie gaga project.
hear that? that's the sound of the world collapsing under the weight of its awesomeness.
he should do cats next. i'm thinking gabby might be into it.
what's the weirdest thing you've ever made your pet wear?

nyc's catwoman caught, identity revealed
and it's not selina kyle.
it turns out the woman who donned a cat mask to rob fancy stores is actually the lead singer of a death metal band. crazy, right? but not too surprising. morty toured with ozzy for a few years back in the nineties.
cats are drawn to the darkness. or is the darkness drawn to them?

cou-grrrr
those crazy cougars are back in the news today. this time the DNR isn't sure if all those sightings were actual cougars or just some sort of mystery beast. we vote mystery beast, preferably unicorn or dragon.
but it's bad news for any big cat that is found - it'll end up in a drawer, piece by piece.
hope they can read.

the cat and the wheelie bin
it's everywhere. the story of the woman who put a cat in a wheelie bin (that's fancy brit talk for garbage can) and all of the outrage that followed is hard to miss. there's even a facebook group.
but why is this story so big? the cat is ok. the woman did a horrible thing, yes, but it was not a crime. and isn't that what we should be more outraged about? that it's so easy to throw a cat away and not be prosecuted for it?
i suppose what i hope to see come out of this is a new way of thinking about cats and an end to their status as "disposable" pets; ones that can be tossed to the shelter whenever we tire of them. so if nothing else, let lola's story outrage you. but focus that anger on the real crime - the deaths of shelter cats every day, everywhere.

compassionate kittehs
remember oscar, the nursing-home cat that predicts deaths? he'll soon be taking his incredible gift to hollywood.
also in california, a rescued cat named christopher lives in a vet clinic where he helps save kitty lives and soothes the sick and dying.
"he'll often paw at a cage door to be let in so he can comfort and clean a cat in there." aww. what a wonderful guy.

les chats - amusant!
current obsession - a new webseries from funnyordie.com called les chats that explores the complex societal stigma of the "mad cat man." and yeah, it's pretty funny too:
just another day at the office here.

meet mandy
edit-Mandy found a great home at the adoption fair on august 29!
this little girl is about 13 weeks old, is spayed, up-to-date on vaccines and available for visits at our monroe street store. her beginnings are unknown; she was found by herself under a car in the vilas neighborhood and was taken in by happy cat club for foster care.
mandy loves doing all the regular kitten things like getting into trouble and rough-housing with other cats but she's also a big cuddle-bug with a thunderous purr.
more pics after the jump (you won't want to miss them. trust me.)

oreo goes home
some punks just can't handle the 'nip, huh?
this bunch o' double-stuff goodness is oreo, who found a great home during sunday's adoption fair. hard to believe she was scheduled to be euthanized a couple weeks ago.
and why? - shelter "overcrowding", and the fact that oreo needed some dental work. but local no-kill group happycat intervened, and this lapcat is going to her forever home.
we need more success stories like oreo's, and we need no kill now.
bonus - more pics of oreo after the jump!

who you gonna call? the handicats!
a new webcomic features two special needs cats, homer and ajax, teaming up to fight the gulf oil spill and other devious things.
you might remember homer as the blind cat we blogged about last year and the character of ajax was inspired by oscar, the kitty who has bionic back legs.
just another fun way to get special needs cats some attention and give us some LOLs.

snooki and snooky
in a bit of completely irreverent news, jersey shore's tiny terror, snooki, was denied a trademark on her name because an illustrated, backwards hat-wearing cat already beat her to it.
how about that for poetic justice?
at least we know she likes cats. that should soften the blow.

cat - it's what's for dinner?
in case you haven't heard, some guy in upstate new york tried to marinate his cat in the trunk of his car. police found the cat covered with oil, crushed red peppers and chili peppers.
what a lousy cook. everyone knows you season cats with a little garlic.
all joking aside, we're happy the cat is safe with new owners, who named him oliver. i woulda named him stu.
bonus - is it legal to eat your cat?

it's hot
really, really hot.
so hot that refrigerated canned food actually tastes good.
you probably already know this, but, just in case, here's a tip: "hot weather dangerous for pets."
so be careful. goodman pool is still open. go for a swim. it's hot.

t-n-r roundup
good news coming out of corpus christi - the A&M campus has been working alongside a city t-n-r program to manage and reduce its feral population with success.
wish we could say the same thing about racine's countryside shelter. there are disputes over their annual kill percentage because they don't want to include all the ferals automatically killed.

crikey!
here's yer sunday weird for you:
scientists have unearthed the 100 million year old fossil remains of an african creature that resembled a cross between a crocodile and a cat - fo sho the most fearsome creature of the cretaceous period.
the pakasuchus was an evolutionary game changer. it had teeth and jaws resembling a cat, giving it the ability to chew and grind food. the ability to take a long catnap? yeah, not sure where they got that one.

link went home!
good news, everyone! happy cat kitten, Link, was adopted last night.
the little guy was at the west-side store for a few weeks doing his best to woo potential adopters while we all got our kitten-fix by squeezing and loving and hiding him in a bucket of ninja rats. it's what we do.
good luck, link. may the force be with you.

splish splash
watch out michael phelps. nazzaning the cat might be creepin up on yer record.
after swelling on her vertebrae paralyzed her entire left side, nazzaning learned to walk again through hydrotherapy. the swimming motion in water helps her muscles re-learn the correct way to move, and if she makes a mistake it’s much less severe than if she’s walking on dry land.
i just love the look on her face in the picture. it's like, "oh noes, they be stealin' my dry land!" just don't forget the shower cap.
check out a vid of nazzaning swimming after the jump!
