cats are truly amazing! if it means delicious noms they will go to insane efforts to get it, even if that means hauling around a fish that weighs more than they do. whatever show this is, i love it!

a farewell to presidential cats

sad news, everyone. we've lost another first cat. socks, the clinton's black and white tuxedo cat, passed away on friday at the age of 19. socks joined the clinton family in 1991 when chelsea adopted him as a stray.

socks fun fact! In 1996, Socks appeared on a series of stamps in the Central African Republic with Bill Clinton.

in january, india, the bush family's first cat passed away at 18 years of age. the black american shorthair was named after a pro ball player and was featured in a few of the bush whitehouse's holiday movies alongside his canine brother, barney.

perhaps socks and india are now up in kitty heaven rabble rousing and putting their partisan politics aside in favor of a good old cat nap.

book store cat rivals the madcats for luvins

more proof that having cats make everything better, especially in public places like book stores.

"On Monday mornings you could see lipstick kisses on the window of a used bookstore downtown. Bar girl kisses, in pinks and reds, left behind for Silas the bookstore cat."

no lipstick for us, yet, but we do get tiny hand prints and toddler raspberries on our windows!

cats and plastic

plastic bags are generally a big hit with cats. they crinkle to the touch and make fun hidey-holes for games of pounce. some cats take their love of plastic a little further -- they lick it. there are many theories as to why cats prefer the taste of plastic but the most logical explanation is that many bags today are manufactured with potato and corn starches, making them biodegradable. since cats are known to have a sweet tooth for carbohydrates these bags make for a nice mid-day snack.

as always, use caution when allowing your cats to play in bags and remove them if the licking turns into chomping.

cat scan detects lung cancer

another reason cats rule: they save your life.....even when they don't particularly like you.

"He's never had that much to do with me except to come over for a pet," Adams said with a laugh."

meet miss moose!

moose is a lovely adult female currently awaiting her forever home over at the west side store. she was surrendered to DCHS because her owners no longer had time for her and had developed allergies. she does have one special need and that is low stress due to her benign heart murmur and elongated mitro valve. moose is a very healthy and happy girl and needs someone to give her the love and attention she deserves.

to meet moose just stop by our mineral point store. for addoption info contact our friends at happy cat club.

no wine for whiny cats

cats, being curious by nature, are often-times trying to get into our food and drink. thinking if it's good enough for us it must be good enough for them is just one of their innate qualities. while this may be ok for things like pillows, hair brushes, water faucets and q-tips it is just too dangerous for them to share a sip of our wine. yes the idea of a drunk kitty is humorous, but lets leave that to garfield and the lolcats.

diablo, round two

remember our happy cat, diablo? well he was adopted out late last week and and returned to DCHS only a day later because he was improperly introduced to the adopters' other cat. luckily our happy cat adoption coordinator spotted him at the shelter and got him into foster care right away. he has a bit of a cold but seems happy to be spending time in a nice home. so, if you were thinking about adopting him or even if you want to meet him now is your second chance!

for more info, email or call the happy cat club of madison.

ever get that sinking feeling? lol!

a singular peculiarity of our fine feline friends is that for some reason they really enjoy laying in sinks. Maybe it's the bowl-shape or the proximity to fresh water, or maybe they just like getting attention by doing goofy things. either way, it's pretty darn cute.

foster care is where the love is

one of the biggest tenets of the no kill philosophy is to put faith in people, everyday people. one way rescue groups and shelters are doing that is by relying on the community for foster care of young, sick or injured animals who would have a hard time living in a shelter environment. if you have ever considered fostering cats here's your opportunity to give it a go. check out this story on a foster care giver in illinois, respectfully thought of as the cat woman.

super bowl kitty halftime show!

here's an old clip of animal planet's genius kitty halftime show for anyone who may miss it tonight. but really, springsteen over kittens? really?

the tenacity of no kill

no kill is spreading despite the tough times. using the philosophy of thinking outside the box enterprising shelters are finding new ways to raise money and save lives. some are even lucky enough to have benefactors with cool cars and big hearts step in to save the day.

they say hard times bring out the best in people. it certainly seems that way.
