let's go to the park!

the old adage reads "a tired dog is a good dog."

nothing tires 'em out more than a trip to the dog park where socializing, running, sniffing and horseplay are not only allowed but encouraged. consider it a "recess" for your dog; remember how pumped you were to get outside and play?

we sell dog park permits because we believe in the power of play. pick one up and enjoy being a kid again.

reduced-fee microchips at DCHS april 21-27

next week is national pet ID week, a time to recognize the importance of tagging and microchipping your pets in order to keep them out of  shelters.

dane county humane society is offering reduced-fee microchipping from april 21 through the 27th. cost is only $15 and the procedure takes no more than a couple of minutes and walk-ins are accepted.

worried it might hurt your kitty? fret not. microchips are the size of a grain of rice and are inserted transdermally with a needle. kitty won't feel a thing.

new fromm formulas!

ladycats and gentledogs, prepare your pallets.  fromm just came out with some brand-new flavors of grain-free dry food... and we've got 'em!

cats can get a taste of the wild side with two new flavors:  gamebird, featuring a mix of duck, turkey, chicken and quail, and salmon tunachovy, with a tasty blend of salmon, tuna and anchovies.

dogs get one new flavor but it's got chops, literally.  pork and peas is a grain-free, chicken-free formula good for dogs with protein-sensitivities and allergies.

we've always been happy to stock a high-quality, wisconsin-made food and now you get more to choose from.  shop local, eat local.  see you in the food aisle.

natura recall expanded - california natural, evo, innova

natura pet products has expanded its previous voluntary recall of certain lots of dry food after further products tested positive for salmonella. no salmonella-related illnesses have been reported to date. the salmonella-strain has been traced to one of the production machines in natura's facility.  not all product is affected.

madcat has several natura brands affected by this recall, including:
evo, california natural and innova.  we have pulled all recalled product and encourage you to check your bags  for lot codes.

you will find lot codes located either on the top or bottom of the front of packaging - they will appear underneath the expiration date.  bring your bag(s) into the store and we will read your code for you.

a complete list of pulled product and codes is below (click "read more").

natura's press release contains a link to a pdf file of all affected product.  we found it handy to use the ctrl+F computer function to search for specific products.

dog chew recall

one of our more popular rawhide chews, pigskin porkies, have been voluntarily recalled by the manufacturer due to possible banned antibiotics found in the chinese-sourced chicken.  any porkies can be returned for a full refund.  note: no health problems have been reported.

this latest incident has pushed us to stick to our convictions and drop the product altogether.  bad quality-control and manufacturing practices are all-too-common in chinese production and we, as a company, are getting away from such sources in order to carry more domestically-produced natural chews like Bixbi, True Chews, and Etta Says.

senorita spot - FIV-positively stunning

we are excited to introduce our monroe street store's newest foster-cat-in-residence... senorita spot.  she's a kitler with a heart of gold.

she is the first FIV+ cat to be hosted by madcat via friends of ferals. feline immunodeficiency virus is species-specific and can not be transmitted to humans, dogs, rabbits, etc.

spot is 4 years old and has spent years in foster care due to problems with her teeth resulting in their total removal (no dentals! w00t).  she still enjoys eating both wet and dry food and with no chompers there is very reduced risk of FIV transmission to other cats. in fact spot has lived with other cats while in foster care and would to go to a home with brothers and sisters to play with.

interested?  the adoption fee is $20 and applications are available in-store or online.

2012 adoptions - a fuzzy review

we restarted our in-store cage adoption program in july, partnering with dane county friends of ferals to place adoptable cats in our westside and monroe street stores.

as you can see from the furry faces above, it was a total success with 16 cats being adopted out in five months: dax, deedee, folgers, autumn, isaac, jedi, chica, cali, pomona, minerva, sybil, tufster, mulan, vlad, larry and madonna.

we hope to continue this progress throughout 2013 and keep marching towards a better madison for all cats.
